Founded by the late Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares, Inc. brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry and food insecure on Long Island and, to the best of their ability, provides for the humanitarian needs of the community.
The goals of Long Island Cares are to improve food security for families, sponsor programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educate the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. Our vision is “A Hunger Free Long Island”.
FOOD PANTRIES – Long Island Cares operates satellite locations including, its own emergency food pantries at several community locations.
MOBILE OUTREACH – The Long Island Cares’ Mobile Outreach Resource Enterprise (MORE) provides information, referral assistance and emergency food to people when their neighborhood pantries are not open
BAXTER’S PET PANTRY – You shouldn’t have to decide between buying food or giving up your family pet.
VETERANS PROJECT: Long Island Cares understands the challenges faced by returning soldiers and their families as troops transition from the front lines to the home front. To help veterans from both Nassau and Suffolk Counties facing financial hardship and food insecurity as they assimilate back into civilian life, we offer several veterans’ service programs:
S.O.S (SUPPORTING OUR SENIORS) – When it comes to food insecurity and hunger among our population of seniors, we need to develop broad and creative approaches that both insure that services are available, in addition to defining and measuring achievable outcomes.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND RECOVERY – This program was developed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy as Long Island Cares, Inc. took the lead in coordinating and serving individuals severely impacted by the storm with emergency food, household supplies, individual monetary grants, etc.
DONATE – Your donations make a difference! Every $10 you donate provides 11 meals!
VOLUNTEER – With the help of people like you, Long Island Cares, has the opportunity to support families in your community and families across Long Island.
